Each story begins with one unbelievable fact: a dead pope put on trial, a marathon runner given poison and brandy, or two countries nearly going to war over a pig. We then trace what actually happened, keep the important context intact and tell it with a dry sense of humour.
The aim is not to turn history into fiction. It is to show how often the truth has already done the difficult writing for us.
